Michael B. Stark named new Executive Director of the Skagit Community Foundation
Mount Vernon, WA. January 11, 2020. The Skagit Community Foundation Board of Directors hired Michael B. Stark as Executive Director effective January 1, 2020, succeeding Mary J. McGoffin. “We looked for someone who had the right combination of professional and personal skills to represent the Foundation and we found this in Michael,” said Mary J. McGoffin, retiring Executive Director.The succession planning began two years ago when Mary announced her intentions to the Board of Directors. “I wanted to allow ample time to find the right person and provide the mentoring needed to ensure a smooth leadership transition,” Mary continued.
“I had the pleasure of serving with Mary for the past three years,” stated Tyler Steinman,
incoming Board of Director chairman. “She expanded the Foundation’s capacity to manage
large gifts on behalf of the community. I am confident Michael will be able to lead the
Foundation going forward.
Michael Stark, a Big Lake resident, graduated from the University of Montana with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Management in 2011. He worked in the investment and financial services sector while living in Missoula, Montana. Michael brings several years of nonprofit experience to the position. He served as President of the Board of Directors for the Women’s Opportunity Resource and Development (W.O.R.D.), and Treasurer of the Board of Directors for Head Start-Child Start Missoula. In 2017, Michael was named Volunteer Fundraiser of the Year by the Western Montana Fundraisers Association and was chosen to speak at the Montana Nonprofit Association’s Annual Conference in 2018. In 2015, he led numerous grassroots fundraising events. Michael was a member of the Missoula Rotary Club and Rotary Youth Exchange Committee. He coached soccer for the Missoula Strikers Soccer Association for three years.
“I am very grateful to be doing this work, in this place, with so many stakeholders that care so deeply about Skagit County. I am also honored to be enrolled in the Leadership Skagit Class of 2020 and to be part of that family,” said Michael.
The Skagit Community Foundation is a 501(c)3 Not-for-Profit organization. The Foundation
connects people who care with causes that matter. In 2019, the Foundation awarded over
$400,000 in grants in the areas of arts & culture, education, health and basic needs, and the
